The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded ten goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he admitted that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Return
At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Finding His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set.
