Area Law Enforcement
Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers state they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then located multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report early analysis suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the public for details.
A high-ranking official said the incident made him stunned and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in 2020.
